Visual Arts Department
The Skyline High School Visual Arts Department is dedicated to providing a challenging interdisciplinary curriculum which inspires academic and artistic excellence for a culturally diverse population. We are committed to a personalized atmosphere of self-esteem, respect, enthusiasm and cooperation. With the guidance of our professional faculty, the students will learn to build both theoretical and practical foundations, expand their vision, and explore new avenues of expression.
Skyline is fortunate to offer a variety of 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, and technology focused classes at both the beginning and advanced level. Beginning VPA-VA students are required to take Beginning Drawing, Beginning 2D Design and Beginning 3D Design during their freshman year. These classes are based on the elements and principles of design, and broadly explore careers in art, technology in art, art theory, art criticism, materials, and an intensive focus on the creative process. VPA students in these classes are introduced to a variety of media and digital media, and also develop an online digital portfolio to be used throughout their high school career.
During their sophomore year, VPA-VA students continue their studies with Intermediate Drawing, Intermediate 2D Design, and Intermediate 3D Design. Once these first 3 credits (6 classes) are fulfilled, students are counseled by the VPA-Visual Arts staff on the direction of their studies to determine which Advanced and elective classes to take. Finally, students complete their studies with one of the 3 AP Studio courses (full year- 1 credit) and the VPA capstone class.
